Yoga and Mindfulness Program
Today’s students face tremendous pressure to achieve within a world that is often overwhelming. The tools of yoga and mindfulness offer proven methods of managing physical, mental and emotional stress. Bringing these practices to your school or community organization is a simple way to make your students’ lives happier and healthier, increase their capacity to learn effectively, manage their emotions, regulate their own behavior, and achieve personal and academic success.
Little Flower offers a unique curriculum combining yoga and mindfulness practices in a straightforward and intentional way. Our core curriculum is based on a five unit, 30 week program. Units progress from an emphasis on the individual to an awareness of the community.
Our approach incorporates five key elements in each session: Connect, Breathe, Move, Focus and Relax. Within these elements students are taught fundamental life skills that are immediately available for daily use.
- CONNECT – Within each class the connect activity increases students awareness of themselves, each other and their environment. We use mindfulness practice to help tune in to what is happening in our bodies and minds, orient ourselves within the present moment, and stay connected to what is most essential.
- BREATHE – Learning to regulate and stabilize our own breath is a powerful way to control our emotional and energetic state. Every session teaches students ways to harness the power of their breath to help calm down in challenging situations, or give themselves more energy when they need it.
- MOVE – In every session students are exposed to a range of yoga postures that improve physical health, increase confidence, and provide the type of challenging movement that we know increases brain activity.
- FOCUS - Every day students are called upon to exert a tremendous amount of concentration and focus, staying connected with many distractions both internal and external. Each session offers students tools to increase their ability to notice when the mind is wandering and bring it back to the task at hand.
- RELAX – Our students are exposed to an overwhelming amount of sensory stimulation and are chronically sleep deprived. This impacts their capacity to learn and retain new information. All of our classes incorporate a period of rest, where students learn to recognize exhaustion and restore alertness.
